Most ranchers scrutinize EPDs, frame scores, and pedigree depth when selecting a herd sire. These are legitimate considerations. But there is one variable that quietly determines whether any of those genetic attributes ever reach the ground as live calves: fertility. A bull that fails to settle cows does not simply underperform — he actively erodes the profitability of your entire breeding program, often before you realize what is happening.

At a national average weaned calf value of roughly $900 per head, a fully fertile bull settling 95 percent of eligible cows produces approximately 95 calves — a gross calf revenue near $85,500, before expenses.

Now introduce a subfertile bull with a 70 percent conception rate. That same operation weans closer to 70 calves, a reduction of 25 head. At $900 per calf, the direct revenue loss approaches $22,500 in a single season. The bull's purchase price — whether he cost $3,000 or $10,000 — becomes almost irrelevant against that figure.

The financial damage does not stop at reduced calf numbers. Consider the secondary costs:

Extended calving seasons. Cows that are not settled in the first cycle will cycle again 21 days later, pushing late-born calves further into the season. Those calves are lighter at weaning, less uniform as a marketing group, and more vulnerable to environmental stress. A compressed, early calving window is a measurable competitive advantage — a subfertile bull destroys it.

Increased open-cow culling costs. Open cows represent a double loss: no calf revenue and ongoing feed and maintenance costs for an animal that did not contribute to production. If your operation retains cows that simply were not settled due to the bull's failure, the cost compounds year over year until the problem is identified.

Repeat breeding and synchronization expenses. Ranchers who discover poor conception rates mid-season often respond by introducing cleanup bulls or implementing emergency synchronization protocols. What a Proper Evaluation Should Include

A standard BSE is the minimum threshold, not the ceiling. Ranchers who treat fertility as a genuine production priority should consider the following evaluation framework before finalizing any bull purchase:

Current BSE certification. The examination should have been performed within the past 60 days. Results from a prior season carry limited predictive value, as fertility can decline due to illness, nutritional stress, or injury.

Morphology percentages beyond the pass threshold. A bull can pass a BSE with 30 percent normal morphology, which is the minimum standard. Prioritizing bulls with 70 percent or greater normal morphology provides a meaningful margin of safety, particularly in high-heat environments where sperm quality is further challenged.

Scrotal circumference as a genetic proxy. Scrotal circumference correlates with sperm production capacity and has a moderate to high heritability, meaning daughters of bulls with superior scrotal measurements tend to reach puberty earlier. This single measurement offers both immediate fertility information and long-term genetic value.

Physical soundness evaluation. Feet, legs, body condition, and libido are all components of a bull's practical ability to settle cows under real-world conditions. A bull with marginal foot structure may have excellent semen quality but be unable to mount cows effectively across rough terrain by mid-season.

The mathematics of bull fertility make a compelling argument for purchasing breeding stock from operations that prioritize reproductive evaluation as a standard practice.
